The project

A tough decision

October 2022

We are sad to announce that we made the tough decision to end the cohousing project we set out to build.

Over the last 4 and a half years, we have bought the land, have build the community, designed our homes, and have acquired resource and building consents. But in the end, the building market outran us. In the last two years, the build cost for our project has risen by 90%, and this was not viable with the bank or project members.

It’s been an absolute pleasure to create this community around us, and to try and forge a progressive way forwards for housing in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We do believe that we have demonstrated that there is a desire for better quality medium density housing in Aotearoa New Zealand. We hope that cohousing projects will continue to thrive to create better, more livable cities and communities.

History:

We formed in March 2018, and in April 2019 purchased 136 Adelaide Road in central Wellington. We have completed the design with Spacecraft Architects, and have Building Consent.

Our governance structure has been established with the expertise of lawyer Arti Chand, and we’re working closely with DUX Financial Services to ensure the financial viability of our project.

We are building a body of knowledge and hope that our project will provide a blueprint for more medium density co-housing in Wellington and New Zealand.

Our current members

What deposit will I need?

Building new homes takes more capital upfront than buying them – our members are funding 30% of the build cost, with the bank loaning the remaining 70%. The 30% have been paid by members in June 2020, so anyone who comes on board now will have to pay around 30% of their future apartment.

Can I use my Kiwisaver?

Possibly. If you’re hoping to use your kiwisaver, get in touch and we can talk details.

How many apartments are still available?

There are no apartments available at the moment.
